Dumpling Daughter

I have been on various diets which hindered my ability to try and eat things that would not fit in to my daily macros. Nonetheless, As I was reading through the Boston Globe for references for this upcoming Chinese New Year (click here for the article!) , I stumbled across Dumpling Daughter and I began looking for reviews for comparison. You know, I had to put my food critique cap on first. Then I went to Yelp for more reviews and I saw mixed reviews.. Some said it was bland, but the ones that appeared were mostly positive (here). Hence, I decided to check this place out with the gang and I decided that I would have a cheat meal with this one.

When I arrived there, I loved how the place was decorated. It's casual, bright, has a contemporary feel, and was crowded at my time of visit and I was expecting GOOD dumplings because of their name plus the fact that the owner's Asian so I assumed that she should know awesome Asian cooking!

But then, my expectations were ruined. Having said, growing up in an Asian country and the fact that I have traveled to a number of Southeast Asian country and a number of the Northern Asian countries.. I have my references  and their food did not resemble any of the qualities, nor taste of those served in China, Hong Kong, and even Singapore and Indonesia! But, I would say that some of their foods do look great sight-wise and in picture.

 Pan Seared Pork Dumpling

The first dumpling that came to our table was their pan seared pork dumpling with napa cabbage and it was bland taste-wise. I did not taste any crunchiness  at all with regards to the cabbage, nor any texture that would represent that the fact that there were cabbages in it.  The filling was too little, yet the thick skin was WAY to thick for the gang nor I have never eaten a guo tie (Guo tie is the chinese word for pan fried chinese dumplings) with a skin that is so thick as the one they served in my life. The skin was so thick that I have to use a table knife to cut neatly and I can't simply use my chopsticks to pierce through. Plus, the dumplings arrived warm and not piping hot.

However, the dish was rescued by their sweet and slightly tangy dipping sauce in which I think was good. It just need slightly more salt.

Petit Chicken Dumplings with Szechuan Sauce

Next on arrival was  the Petit Chicken Dumplings with Szechuan Sauce (they spell them Sichuan, but I always spell Szechuan using the latter) and boy, this was horrible. Despite looking very appetizing with those garlic-looking stuffs, these dumplings suffer from the same issues as mentioned above: the skin was too thick, and it was bland (It should be noted that these dumplings are normally not served hot, so it's normal) . Frankly, I find their warnings very misleading because these babies did not taste very Szechuan at all - it was marked spicy on the menu, but it was not spicy at all! Perhaps they should not name these babies bearing the Szechuan name coz it ain't szechuan without the heat.

Steamed Organic Chicken and Napa Cabbage Dumpling

The THICK SKIN.

The same disease was also suffered by the steamed chicken and napa dumpling: It's bland, and I did not taste the traces of any napas, the skin's too thick plus the filling was way too little. The only remedy was the dipping sauce. R also ordered the Pork and Chive dumpling and for me, this was the best tasting out of all three as the richness of the pork saved it and made it rich in taste. But then again, the same disease were present and I also could not taste the chives. Both dishes arrived very dry and closer to cold rather than being  piping hot whereas the Jiaozi (the chinese word for steamed chinese dumplings, not the same as Wonton!)  I used to eat arrived always slightly moist, steamy and piping hot!

 Braised Pork Belly Buns

Unlike any other braised pork belly buns I have ever tasted in my life, this one does not have the overpowering sweetness and saltiness unlike the buns I have ever eaten in Asia. I would not mind more seasonings, though. The buns came out cold in which I do not really adore as I always got them heated, but the mantou (the buns!) they used was perfect for my liking, nonetheless.

Three-day Pork Ramen

Where I should I start? Ramen. Since the establishment decided to title this dish with the title Ramen, it does not mean that it should have bamboo shoots in it in which I and Chris think that the bamboo shoot is way out of place for this dish as it does not complement the Giu Nyuk a.k.a Babi Hong. Despite the Giu Nyuk (the pork) smelled like a typical giu nyuk, it is bland and needs to be sweetened more. Then comes the broth which was tasteless and didn't taste rich at all.  Are they sure that they took three days to make this? I don't believe so because ramen joints that boasts that they took 24 hours to cook their broth was able to create something that is richer without MSG of course! (Missing you, Marutama Ramen...)

Golden Fried Buns with Condensed Milk

Last but not least, I have been avoiding desserts for the sake of the success of my diet and I could not resist trying these good looking buns. I cut a small bite and I was immediately saddened as I have to cheat, even for a small piece of buns that tasted horrible. Despite being crispy and having a great texture, the buns carries over the fragrant from frying using a used cooking oil. I did not finish my bun due to this unpleasant smell as I find it disturbing to my palate.

Hence, I had a not-so-good experience dining here in this establishment despite the fact that I enjoyed taking pictures of these good looking foods. Reminiscing the fact that I have to take a cheat meal resulted me in enduring more guilt because I spent my cheat meal eating the foods I did not enjoy eating. Despite the fact that the dishes we ordered looked very appetizing and great presentation-wise, taste highly needs to be improved and they should serve their dishes at the right temperature. Plus, they shall re-title their Szechuan dumplings into something else.

I realized that my expectations might be slightly too high on this one, but well.. Guo tie-s are Guo tie-s, and Jiaozi-s are Jiaozi-s. and it is relatively easy to find alternatives that served better guo ties and jiaozis around Boston with a lower price tag and a bigger portion, and even ones that were HEAVENLY in Asia and in my hometown, Jakarta.

Sunday Dim Sum at Myers + Chang

On a windy yet snowy day, me and my mates decided to have a Sunday Dim Sum Brunch at Myers + Chang. To fulfill my dear pal's request - Sherley (check her blog out at hellosherley.com!) to try this establishment that looked hip and young... the gang decided to meet up directly after I made the reservation.

As we arrived at the venue, we were seated at a high top table and we ordered some steamed dim sum, some carbs, and some desserts to wrap up our meal. The first dish that came up was the Mama Chang's pork potsticker dumpling. It was fine.

Next on my list was the Kimchi fried Quinoa Bokkeumbap with Bulgogi which was actually quite good. Since I ate Quinoa on a daily basis, I have to admit that putting quinoa in place of rice was very creative and the result was tasty.

Next up, we have two dumplings. One was filled with a braised pork belly, and one was with Asian marinated beef. I have to admit that the marinade was too salty on both dishes but the marinated beef bao tasted better than the pork one. (The focus was a mess on this one - sorry I'm way too appetized!)

And lastly, Sherley and I had the Tea Smoked Ribs. Nothing special but okay.

On the other hand, DJ ordered their nasi goreng - it had pineapples in it so he did not really like it.

I saved the best for last. Their Genmaicha Panna Cotta was inevitably.. the star of my meal. It was soft, delicious, and appetizing. And like what I always liked - it was not too sweet!

Overall I had a nice dim sum experience at this hip place without the grumpy waitresses at traditional Chinese restaurants. Service was fast and staff were very responsive towards our questions and requests. Despite the higher prices, I would, definitely come back for more of the panna cotta!

Guangdong Barbeque Restaurant, HK

Yeap. Continuing on with the food journey in Hong Kong! Moving along to the restaurants near my hotel... There was Sushi One.. in which I reviewed last year.. and there's also this: The Guangdong Barbeque Restaurant. I've been waiting to gather some more pics and finally... it came true through this visit. I have lots of pictures for this restaurant.. and here goes nothing.

**Long Post with Lots of Pictures ahead**

As one of the nearest restaurant from my Hotel (Park Hotel) ... It opens quite early. Like 8? I donno. When I left the lobby hotel towards Chatham road.. this restaurant was already opened. This is also one of the reason why we stayed in Park Hotel again due to the fact that it is closer to various delicious foods! We ate here for most of the trip. Like.. 80% ? Why? Check this one out.

Restaurant Facade

Restaurant Interior

Well yeah. The place was kinda cramped.. and a bit squishy as well. But their food.. It was awesome. Before eating... Lets all drink milk.

Pasteurized Milk

The meal I had below is the meal I had for 70% of my brekkie here until I switched into something else. Yes, the Pork Chop noodles. Served in a soup... this baby is delicious! the broth is rich.. well.. not like Indomie's richness as some might judge it looks like an indomie... and the pork chop itself was really nice. Wish I could had the vocab to say that I want it crispy..

Pork Chop Noodles

While I enjoyed this as my favorite option.. I finally changed into this: Prawn Noodles. It was nice... but the broth was not as rich as the pork one.

Prawn Noodle

While I had those two... Mom tried this one: The Barbeque Pork Chop noodles. While it may sounds more delicious.. I like to keep things simple. haha.

Barbeque Pork Noodles

Mom also changed her course into this noodle below.. The beef noodle. Similar to the prawn one.. But I say this one's more delicious.

Beef Noodles

Moving along.. to my sis. At some point.. She tried the Spicy Pork Chop noodles. Similar to what I have.. the difference is that this one's spicy and looks to have some sorta seaweed as an assortment.

Spicy Pork Chop Noodles

The Kway Teow here was also good.

Beef Kway Teow

This time.. My dad. He had these Breakfast Platter with Egg and Sausages on the first day.

Bread and Sausage Platter

Second day.. He finished most of the mapo tofu we ordered since he was confused of what to order.

Mapo Tofu

And third day.. A bowl of porridge.

Porridge / Congee

And finally.. D-day.. Back to me. I had this: Rice with Duck. NICE. Their Duck was NICE. Why? It has no aftertaste and was properly marinated.

But.. hey. again. What makes you eat here for the most of your trip? It all comes back to one thing: You may see one similarity in all of the pictures I posted above. It's their Milk Tea! It is.. just.. so... delicious and rich and I could not express it into words really. But from what I heard.. The evaporated milk they use.. is special. I tried browsing for them in Supermarkets.. and I still could not find them. Special order perhaps?

Whatever. The food was excellent. The milk tea was unforgettable. Much better than the one I had in Macau despite the same cup.. -___- . In regards to  their service.. Communication was a major problem. But thanks to various posters and illustrations.. Communication issues can be partially solved.

P.S: Menu names might be different from the original because everything here was all in CHINESE while I don't read Chinese.

Laurel Chinese Restaurant, Galaxy Macau

A few days ago, I went to Hong Kong and Macau to visit some relatives who are now indeed a citizen of the area. Food? Of course. In fact, despite the Chinese food boredom, I truly enjoyed most of the food I ate during the trip. Without further a due, let's begin the journey!

On my third day, I went to Macau to see all the beauty the Island has to offer and to meet my other relatives who resides in Macau. Having an afternoon arrival in Macau, I was picked up by my relatives from the port. (Geez! I hate sailing through the seas!) We then hanged out a while on a cafe located not far from the port (A review on this will be coming shortly) and after that, we head to the glitzier part of Macau. Casinos! At our arrival, I found out that actually, my relatives has already arranged a special dinner for us at the Galaxy Resorts in Macau at the Laurel Chinese Restaurant.

 The Restaurant Interior

However sadly, due to the big party we brought... We had to use the function room to fit us all.

Despite the function room issue and the lack of view we can enjoy.. Let's just cut to the food shall we?
So for the pickles, we were given the tofu (front).. and the pork ears (back).

Without any clear appetizers, the first dish that came out is the Preserved Vegetables and Turnip cooked with a hot coconut milk. Quite tasty and unique. A perfect choice for the cold weather.

Next, are the pork dishes. From top-to-bottom, first up is the Simmered Pork Belly. This one's delicious for sure.. But then.. Well.. You better not peek on the fat while you're eating em... It is too guilty and too delicious to be true... The second dish.. is the Pork Feet. I didn't touch em.. as this dish is too creepy to be true in my opinion.. But my relatives sure ate them in a blazing fast speed..

The third dish on the table is the BBQ Platter. Well.. they are actually.. roasted pork cooked in Hoisin Sauce. Basically, this is one of the best grilled pork I ever had in my life. Hmm.. So tender and soo sweet.. Lastly, is the sweet and sour pork. Nothing special with the sauce though.. but this restaurant sure serve up one of the best pork cuts I ever had.

Continuing on with the feast.. we also had the Roasted Peking Duck. This is definitely the dish everyone love! The duck served here is BIG. Take a look above. Prepared and served with crackers on the plate.. The duck skin is crispy and light. I myself was amazed with the overall presentation on how this dish is served here.. Its just so attractive and completely served with all the sauces and pickle you'd need.

What about the meat? The meat from the duck is then shredded, and cooked with soy sauce. Served with cabbage like below:

For the carbohydrates in regards to this dinner, we ordered the Seafood Fried Rice. Inside it is asparagus, eggs, and some crab meat.

However.. Things are just not complete without a dedicated veggie menu. We also ordered The Green Mustard Soup cooked in Fish Broth. Just Delicious and just refreshing.. Heated with stove to keep the dish pipin' hot as we finish this dish up.

My sis felt unsatisfied without having any paos for dinner. Because of that, we also add some fried Chinese Buns into the table. and another yum for this dish.

Hence the so-regular menu and some simple dishes that can be found in Chinese Restaurants in Jakarta, Laurel offers it with a twist through a fine dining experience and cooked with a different approach. Therefore, this is a totally unique dining experience for me and my family as we went to HK and Macau.

Thanks to my aunts who prepared this special dinner for me and my family!

PS: Expect more and more food reviews made in Hong Kong and Macau in the coming weeks!

Taipan Seafood World

Without any further delays, I present you... My first review post!

MARCH 2012 - After all the Chinese food boredom where we ate 'The Duck Queen' (Name Modified, thanks to Bro Kev for the idea) almost twice every single weekend since February, my dad decides to raise his hand up to to take the whole family to Taipan for dimsum. At first, i growled. "I AM TRULY SICK OF CHINESE FOOD DAD! I'VE HAD ENOUGH!". However, as we arrived an after grabbing something and some other small sized meals to eat, I end up having a very pleasant meal, despite my chinese food boredom.

No More Long Explanations - from the early times when they are still in ITC Mangga Dua and until they relocated to a cozier premises in WTC Mangga Dua, Taipan has been a favorite restaurant for dimsum for many, including our family.

As we are directed to our tables and know what number our tables is, we head to 'The DimSum Gallery' (I made it up myself, the name.) where they displayed small-sized foods from one end to another - up till a hundred (if im not mistaken) food choices available. Woohoo!  this is colours to my eyes!

                                                              From Fried Dim Sum
                                                                           to soups,
which my dad said that the 'Snake Soup' is a must try, which I didn't end up wanting to try

                                                            and to the noodles section

and finally, Desserts! Look at these~!

After walking through the displays and have some waiters bring up trays of steamed and fried dimsums,
we ended up having:

Congee:  Not-to Thick, Served warm, with bits of century egg.
Siew Mai: Unlike what most establishments offer, this has lotsa prawn!

                                                                    Fried Yam Cake

Steamed Ribs with Garlic: Its okay. But at the time of the review, I DIDN'T GET ANY... MY SIS ATE EM ALL UP....

Xiao Lung Bao: One of the best Xiao Lung Bao in town I have to say because the skin is not too
thick. That's what I consider very important in judging whether a XLB is delicious or not.

Tahu Telur Goreng?: not sure whether this is the proper name for the dish.. haha

Char Liong with Prawn and Mayonaisse

and Durian Pancakes for Dessert where I'd say that the skin on this one is at the right thickness, and the
scent and taste of the Durian is just right for me. Not to strong or weak..

And some other as well that my parents and my sis ate very fast as they
arrived at our seats. As I was busy taking some pictures.. Sadly, they were all gone... :(
Overall, I love the meal I had here in Taipan. Its just so exciting!

Pros: There's just many delicious selections over at one place!
Cons: Better dine here with your ma or your dad, if u have a big appetite like me :D
Overall Experience: 4.5/5
